Classic FUE eyebrow transplant healing process - A Scientific Overview of the Classic FUE Healing Process
Many patients who want to have eyebrow design and achieve fuller, curved eyebrows are rightly curious about the process and recovery phases immediately after the operation. Classic FUE Eyebrow Transplant Since the hair follicles are shaved short and micro channels are opened on the brow tissue, the body's biological adaptation to this new situation is subject to a certain physiological schedule. Classic FUE eyebrow transplant healing process, is a gradual biological journey that is directly dependent on the patient's care and patience at home as well as the experience of the physician.
As Istanbul Eyebrow Transplant, our team led by Dr. Handan Yavuz in our Nişantaşı clinic offers a detailed recovery guide to keep our patients' comfort at the highest level after the operation. The classic FUE technique offers unshaven and instant aesthetic results. Long FUE eyebrow transplant may restrict the patient a little more socially for the first 10 days. However, when the post-operative care guidelines are strictly followed, the classical method also provides extremely natural, healthy and permanent results in the long term.
Tissue healing is not just a superficial skin closure, but a process of re-establishing vascular networks in the deeper layers. In the classical FUE method, the skin is traumatized, albeit very slightly, when the micro-channels are opened. The body responds to this trauma with an inflammation (non-inflammatory inflammation) reaction. The slight redness and edema seen in the first 48 hours after the operation is a natural result of the tissue increasing blood flow to repair itself.
Stages of Recovery (Step-by-Step Physiological Calendar)
In the period after eyebrow transplantation, the fusion of the transplanted hair follicles with the tissue and the growth of new hairs to the skin surface takes place in the following stages:
- First 3 Days (Critical Adhesion Period): Immediately after the operation, micro bleeding and slight leaks may be seen in the donor and transplantation area. These leaks dry up and start the crusting process of eyebrow transplantation. In order not to dislodge the roots, the eyebrow area should not be touched with water, make-up and friction should be avoided for the first 72 hours. A light ice compress can be applied to the forehead area.
- Day 4 - Day 10 (Washing and Crusting): From the 4th day onwards, sensitive washing is started with special moisturizing lotions and PH balanced shampoos recommended by our clinic. The lotion softens the crusts, followed by gentle massage movements with warm water, allowing the crusts to fall off. At the end of the 10th day, the crusts should be completely shed and the transplantation area should have a clean and healthy skin.
- 1st - 2nd Month (Shock Shedding Eyebrow Phase): It is the period that worries patients the most but is biologically the healthiest. The transplanted short hairs are shed for new hair production (telogen phase). It is completely normal for temporary gaps to form in the eyebrow area during this process; the stem cells remain alive under the skin and are nourished by new vessels.
- 3rd - 5th month (Re-emergence and Sprouting): The roots complete the resting phase and enter the active growth (anagen) phase. The answer to the question of when eyebrow transplantation is hidden in these months. New eyebrows begin to grow as thin hairs. The hair structure thickens over time and adapts from hair character to eyebrow character.
- 8th - 12th Month (Final Permanent Result): Ekilen greftlerin tamamı çıkmış olur. Kıllar kalınlaşır, kendi doğal formunu bulur ve kaş restorasyon süreci %100 başarıyla tamamlanmış olur. Yüz mimarisiyle tam bir uyum yakalanır.
First 24 Hours After Operation and Donor Site Care
The first 24 hours after eyebrow transplantation are extremely important to prevent the risk of infection and to start the healing of the donor area. At the end of the operation, the donor area in the nape of the neck is covered with a sterile bandage. This bandage absorbs the leaks that may occur on the first night, prevents contamination of your pillow and protects the wound from external factors. The transplanted eyebrow area is never bandaged and left open.
The sleeping position on the first night is vital. We recommend that our patients sleep on their backs with their heads elevated at an angle of approximately 45 degrees (using a double pillow). This position is the best position for local anesthesiaprevents the fluids from descending to the facial area and causing bruising or excessive edema around the eyes.
In addition, it completely eliminates the risk of the eyebrow area rubbing against the pillow or quilt during sleep and dislocating the roots. The next day in our clinic, the bandage on the donor area is removed after dressing by our expert team.
Integration at the Cellular Level and Hair Cycle Physiology
The integration of hair follicles into their new location in the eyebrow area at the cellular level (neovascularization process) begins in the first week following the operation. Follicles placed under the skin are nourished by diffusion from the surrounding tissue fluid (plasmatic imbibition) for the first 3 days. From the 4th day onwards, the micro capillaries in the transplanted area merge with the follicle and initiate direct blood supply. Cells called fibroblasts weave collagen tissue around the root, allowing the follicle to firmly attach to the dermis layer.
After full integration of the root into the tissue is complete, the hair follicle temporarily enters the resting (telogen) phase and shock spill is triggered. This shedding does not mean that the root dies; on the contrary, it is the stem cell expelling the old hair to synthesize a new and stronger hair shaft. From the 3rd month onwards, the follicles enter the anagen (growth) phase, adapting to the metabolic rate of the eyebrow skin and transforming into stable eyebrow hairs that grow more slowly and thicken over time.
Critical Prohibitions After the Procedure: What Should You Avoid?
The success of the classic FUE operation is directly related to the protection of the skin and roots during the healing process. Dr. Handan Yavuz advises our patients to avoid the following activities during the first few weeks after the operation:
- Heavy Sports and Sweating: Intense physical activities such as running, fitness, weight lifting may increase blood pressure and cause the grafts to pop out of the transplanted micro channels (extrusion). Sports are prohibited for the first 2 weeks except for light walking. Sweating may cause irritation in the root canals.
- Sauna, Hammam and Steam Bath: Extremely hot and humid environments cause the tissue in the transplantation area to loosen and increase the risk of infection. Such areas should be avoided for at least 1 month.
- Pool and Sea (Chlorine and Salt Damage): Chemicals in pool water (chlorine) and seawater can weaken and irritate the transplanted roots. Swimming is strongly discouraged for the first 1 month.
- Sun Rays and Solarium: The healing eyebrow skin is extremely sensitive to sunlight. UV rays can cause permanent staining (hyperpigmentation) in the transplantation area. Highly protective creams should be used for the first 3 months or protected with a hat.
What is the Process Difference with Long FUE?
We have summarized the process comparison of Classic FUE and Long FUE methods in the table below for our patients whose time and social life are valuable and who want to spend the healing process comfortably and without hiding:
| Recovery / Process Phase | Classic FUE Method | Long FUE Method |
|---|---|---|
| Operation Day View | Short, spiky strands and exposed rashes | Full-length, natural brow arch and form |
| Crusting Management | Crusts are clearly visible for 10 days | Long strands completely camouflage scabs and redness |
| Back to Social Life / Back to Work | May require 7-10 days off until scabs fall off | The next day (Immediate return to meetings or social life) |
| Shock Spill Perception | Eyebrows fall out completely, gaps can be demoralizing | Feels lighter, the direction of curvature is always clear |
| Final Satisfaction Baseline | Starts after 6-8 months when new strands grow | It starts in the mirror the first second you leave the table |
Frequently Asked Questions
We strongly discourage tweezing, pulling or waxing the transplanted roots during the first 6 months. The use of tweezers can cause the root to die completely. During this period, you can only trim the growing hair tips by cutting them with micro scissors.
Local anesthetic fluids applied during the operation may cause a slight edema or swelling around the eye for the first 2 days due to the effect of gravity. This condition is completely temporary. A cold compress on the forehead (ice application) and sleeping with the head elevated will help the edema to dissipate quickly.
Because the transplanted follicles are the hair follicles in the nape of the neck and they preserve the fast growth genetics of the hair. Therefore, they grow fast in the first months. However, within 1-2 years, they slow down their growth rate by adapting to the blood circulation and hormonal structure in the eyebrow area where they are transplanted.
It is safest to have the first flushing done by our team of specialists in our clinic 48 hours after the operation. Our doctor will check the condition of the roots and show you how to perform the subsequent washings at home.
Absolutely not. Scraping the scabs with a fingernail or forcibly peeling them off leads to dislocation of the hair follicles that have not yet fully fused into the tissue and to a failure of the procedure. The scabs should only fall off spontaneously with washing movements with special lotion shown in our clinic.
Yes, it is normal to feel a slight sweet itching sensation during the healing process as the skin renews itself and the roots fuse with the tissue. However, scratching the transplantation area with a fingernail should be avoided; moisturizing lotions or solutions recommended by your doctor can be used to reduce itching.
After the 10th day after the operation (after the crusts have fallen off), you can take a shower normally, with no pressurized water on your head. During the first 10 days, only the special washing instructions described by our clinic should be followed.
